Add an Opt-in Form to Your Newsletter

I know you’re probably thinking “What? Why would I place an op-in form in my newsletter? If they are getting my newsletter, they’re already on my list.” That’s a valid thought, and normally I would agree with you, except that I just came across a situation where a new subscriber contacted me, wishing that it was easier to be added to my list. Then, it hit me. I realized that if you’re providing useful information, people are probably emailing and sharing your newsletter with colleagues. That’s exactly why you should add an opt-in form to your newsletter.

It Makes Sense

If you are really providing quality information, then your subscribers are definitely sharing your tips with their colleagues, coworkers, and business partners. So, why not take advantage of this? Add a small sign up form in the corner of your newsletter, above the fold, to make it easy for people to subscribe on their own.

Things to consider:

  • Make it small and unobtrusive. Make it a simple contact form asking for their name and email address. If you need more info than that, request it later.
  • Not a coder? That’s okay. Create a landing page for your site, just for referrals from existing subscribers. This will tell you who is sharing your newsletter, and you can measure how effective your strategy is. Insert a link to your landing page in the email.
  • Don’t patronize readers. Be transparent and up front about getting their email address and the fact that you know they are a friend of a subscriber. You’ll actually look more like you have your act together this way, building trust easier.
  • Set up auto-responders for new referrals. These emails should build rapport and show them the benefits of being a subscriber. Hint: offer incentives like free downloads, exclusive information, etc.
  • Take notice of who is referring subscribers, and offer those a reward for their efforts, like an exclusive freebie, or a big discount on one of your handy products or services.

Conclusion

Anything that you can do to grow your email list is definitely worth your time. Even if you just added 10 subscribers per month, in a year that’s 120 subscribers. If just 5% bought one of your products or services for $100, you’d earn an extra $600 that year just for having an opt in form in your newsletter. If that number was 1200, then you’d earn an extra $6000, which is nothing to sneeze at.

Did you add an opt-in form to your newsletter? If so, how has it worked for you? If you have any questions, such as how to set up a landing page, or anything related to what we discussed in this post, contact me directly, or leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
